Is Genie cryptocurrency?
No. There are no tokens, no coins, and no mining. Genie performs ordinary batch computing for businesses that pay in currency, and the household is paid in currency when the work sells.
IN SHORT
No. Genie has nothing to do with cryptocurrency. There are no tokens, no coins, no mining, and no staking. A Genie performs sealed batch computing for businesses through E31 Cloud, those businesses pay in ordinary currency, and the household is paid in ordinary currency when, and only when, the work is sold. No tokens. No mining. Dollars for work.
No. Genie is not cryptocurrency, does not mine cryptocurrency, and does not pay the household in anything but currency. The resemblance people notice, a machine in the home that uses electricity and produces money, is real on the surface and absent underneath. No tokens. No mining. Dollars for work.
The difference is what the electricity is turned into and who pays for it. Genie turns solar surplus into ordinary computing work that a business has ordered. The business pays for that work in currency. Element 31 pays the household in currency for the share that sold. There is no coin at any point in the chain, no exchange rate, and nothing whose value depends on anyone else wanting to buy it later.
What the work actually is
A Genie joins E31 Cloud, which pools many small machines into useful computing capacity for businesses. The jobs are behind-the-scenes batch work that does not mind waiting for the sun. They arrive sealed, run sealed, and leave sealed; Genie cannot read them, the household cannot read them, and the customer can verify exactly what ran.
That work exists because a business needed it done. It would have been done somewhere regardless. Genie's offer is to do it on power that would otherwise have gone unused. The value comes from the customer's need, not from a puzzle solved or a ledger maintained.
How the household is paid
The household is paid when, and only when, the computing their Genie performed is actually sold to a paying customer. The app shows energy used, work performed, work sold, and money owed. When demand is quiet, the app shows that too. There is no reward for merely running, no token issued for uptime, and nothing to hold in the hope that it appreciates.
Element 31 will never promise yields, returns, or passive income. That rule is partly a matter of honesty about weather and demand, and partly a matter of making clear what Genie is not. Genie is paid for work in the way a contractor is paid for work, after it is done and delivered.
Why the distinction matters to the home
Mining consumes power whenever it can get it, because more power means more chances at the reward. Genie draws power only when the home's panels are making more than the home is using, and never from the grid. The home is served first, always, and the rule is enforced in the machine. A Genie cannot be set to run harder by feeding it more electricity, because there is no reward for that and no way to do it.
Genie is in development, and reservations are not yet open; when they open, a reservation will not be a purchase: it will hold your place, it will be fully refundable at any time with one click, and nothing ships until specifications, hosting terms, and measured performance are published. The payment rule is set out in Paid when the work sells, the full list of rules is on the principles page, and the short answer to the other common confusion is in Is Genie a battery?.
Questions this raises
- Is the household paid in a token that can be traded?
- No. The household is paid in currency, after the work is sold. Nothing is issued that could be held in the hope that it appreciates.
- Does Genie use more power to earn more, the way mining does?
- No. Genie draws only on the home's solar surplus and never from the grid. There is no reward for running harder and no way to make it do so by supplying more electricity.
- Where does the value of the work come from?
- From a business that needed the computing done. The work would have been done somewhere regardless; Genie does it on power the home would otherwise not have used.
